Dartmoor: Standing Stones and Tors
2 Day Workshop Only £150

As a current student we are happy to offer you this is a great opportunity to work alongside Paul and Brian within the Dartmoor National Park. They offer you a structured, but fun 2 day weekend of photography. This weekend is normally £199 but as a current student we can offer you a place for just £150.

Foggintor and Swell Tor Quarries– Practice your photography at these abandoned granite quarries. These dates back to about 1820, when granite was extracted from here. This was originally used in the construction of Dartmoor Prison and the Princetown village that grew up around it. In later years Granite was transported further afield by Thomas Tyrwhitt's horse-drawn tramway to Plymouth. This was later replaced by the Yelverton to Princetown railway.

The Foggintor quarry ceased operations soon after the turn of the century, but the neighboring Swell Tor quarry was still worked until the 1930s, and the cottages were not demolished until 1953 when the materials from a lot of them were used for the buildings beneath the nearby North Hessary television mast.

Foggintors major claim to fame is that it was the source of the granite for Nelson's column in Trafalgar Square. (the statue at the top being made of sandstone from scotland). Parts of London bridge were also constructed from Foggintor/Swell Tor Granite, you can still find some uncollected corbles at Swell Tor.

Merrivale and Burrator Reservoir – The shimmering Burrator Reservoir enrobed in tree’s and forestry. Some great opportunities here to take stunning photographs. Merrivale straddles the western edge of the Dartmoor granite outcrop and is famous for its standing stones and stone circle.

As well as being able to immortalise these breathtaking scenes with your camera you will learn:

• Expert camera control, allowing you to take crisp, life-like images.
• Creative use of shutter speed and image composition.
• Depth of field judgment

As with all moorland areas the weather can be a true friend or a cruel enemy. On this trip we recommend walking boots and waterproof clothing. Most digital cameras are only water resistant so we would still recommend rain covers for your camera.

Your tutors will be staying in the hotel with you. So your learning will start over breakfast and continue in the bar after dinner.
